Camp Summary:

Summer Explorers camp sessions are led by certified Montessori teachers. Additionally, Ms. Amy has a degree in Early Childhood Education, and Ms. Sarah has a BFA in Art Education and is MCC's Head of School.

 

Summer Camp at MCC is held Monday - Thursday, with half or full-day options. The half-day morning program runs from 8:30am - 12:00pm and full day programs from 12:00pm-3:00pm. This year an Ad Hoc option is available and allows single half-days to be converted to full day camps.

Students under the age of 4 must have permission to attend the full-day program (Afternoon Explorations), and students under the age of 5 will have a short rest period in the afternoon.

 

Half-day camps are $139.00/ week; full day camps (Morning session plus Afternoon Explorations) are $189.00. Ad Hoc Add-ons are $20.00/each selected day.

 

Montessori summer camps are open to all children meeting minimum age standards.

 

 

2011 Summer Camp Descriptions

 

 

Each week focuses on an area of the Montessori curriculum. All children, 2.5 years of age or older, are invited to attend the MCC Summer Camps for their age group. Prior Montessori schooling is not required.

 

Young Explorers will have free work cycle, as well as, lessons in all areas of the classroom - Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math and Cultural. The Elementary aged camp will participate in guided activities, experiments and projects-both individual and group.

Students under the age of 5 years will have a short rest period in the afternoon.

Half-day camps are $139/ week; full day camps (Morning session plus Afternoon Explorations) are $189 and Ad Hoc afternoon add-ons are $20/selected day. Please inquire for care beyond 3:15pm.

 

Session 1: International Explorers July 11th to 14th

International Explorers will feature an overview of the continents with a more in-depth look at the cultures and biomes of Africa.

Young Explorers will go on Safari to Africa! Discover wildlife in the forests, grasslands and deserts of Africa through storytelling, using maps, games, and crafts.

Elementary Explorers will discover how plants, animals and people have adapted to live in the diverse biomes of Africa.

Afternoon Explorations will bring African traditions alive through folk tales, mask-making, music and more!

 

Session 2: Drama Camp July 18th to 21st

Drama camp is held for students ages 4 and up. Taught by an experienced thespian, Drama helps students develop confidence, verbal expression and communication skills! Drama campers will participate in daily theatre games, instruction on the anatomy of a play and will act out a short skit at the end of the session.

Afternoon Explorations We will have Fun in the Sun! Students will participate in games, outdoor play, and free choice activities.

 

Session 3: Montessori Math Week July 25th to 28th

Young Explorers, whether new or returning to the Montessori classroom, will benefit by attending the Montessori Refresher Camp. Materials that promote language and math skills will be presented, such as calendars, clocks and charts. Students will practice using courteous social interactions and use practical life skills while enjoying sensorial and mathematical explorations!

Math Camp for Elementary will feature a variety of fun activities that will engage the students' interest and curiosity, as well as boost math skills! Each day, a new math concept will be introduced (such as estimation, decimal system, measurement, etc.) followed by several follow-through activities. Daily hands-on geometry lessons will include both group and individual projects.

Afternoon Explorations will extend our mathematical pursuits into even more fun activities-- fraction snacks, math arts & crafts as well as games that feature sequencing, problem-solving, and patterning!

 

Session 4: Nature Explorers August 1st to 4th

Young Explorers will be Getting to Know the Outdoors. Nestled on 4+ acres, our school gives children access to gardens, orchard trees, fields and more during this camp. Children participate in gardening, caring for animals, crafts and Montessori activities daily.

Elementary campers will also enjoy the outdoors through nature walks, working in the garden and finding both materials and inspirations for Nature Crafts. These crafts will include flower pressing, handcrafts, nature printing, and making handmade books.

Afternoon Explorations will feature more Nature fun and games, including a daily cool-off in the sprinkler!

 

Session 5: Earth Science Explorers August 8th to 11th

Young Explorers will learn about science topics such as rocks and minerals and weather. Students will also enjoy Montessori activities during the morning work cycle.

Elementary campers will get to know "How the Earth Works" through a variety of experiments and labs. Topics such as states of matter, energy, the Electromagnetic spectrum, the Lithosphere, volcanoes, earthquakes, and the Atmosphere will excite students and stretch their scientific knowledge.

Earth Science Fun in the afternoon will include highlights such as magnets, using the volcano model, and growing crystals.

 

Session 6: Art and Story August 15th to 18th

Our final session will help enrich language abilities by bringing stories alive with storytelling and art. Young Explorers and Elementary campers will be inspired by a daily folk tale, fairy tale or fable with a follow-up art project, using a variety of art media. After the daily art class, younger campers will have a daily work cycle, followed by a group time of stories and songs.

Elementary campers will then participate in a Launching Literature workshop, featuring short fiction pieces. Students will work on individual and group projects to extend their understanding and command of reading comprehension skills.

Afternoon Explorers will enjoy More Art and More Stories! Outdoor play and group games will round out an awesome day at camp!

Summer Enrichment: Art Explorers

 

MCC offers affordable art classes taught by an experienced Montessori teacher with a degree in Art Education. All materials and snack included. Sibling discount of 10% offered.

 

Art in the Abstract

Friday July 15, 9:00am -12:00pm ($25.00)

Art in the Abstract is about questioning what it means to create a composition that does not have a representational image. From squiggles to shape collages, making abstract art can free children up to focus on color, design, texture and pattern.

 

Animals in Art

Saturday July 23, 9:00am - 12:00pm ($25.00)

Back by popular demand! Children love the work of Eric Carle. His animals use collage in a painterly way to depict simple and accessible scenes. Children will get inspired to go collage- crazy in this art class!

 

ART CAMP I: Impressionism

Friday July 29, 9:00am - 3:00pm ($49.00)

This full day workshop includes a morning art class, lunch, outdoor time, an afternoon group project and a daily art history lesson, highlighting the works of an Impressionist artist.

 

Paint like Pollock

Friday August 12, 9:00am - 12:00pm ($30.00)

Exploring Abstract Expressionism helps students feel free to explore new art ideas and methods. Jackson Pollock, famous for his Action Paintings, will inspire students to put paint on canvas in new ways. Warning: this class will be MESSY.

 

ART CAMP II: Color Crazed

Friday August 19, 9:00am - 3:00pm ($49.00)

This is a full-day camp devoted to exploring the world of color! We will paint with tempera, watercolor, draw with oil pastel and colored chalk pastels and collage with colored paper, while utilizing color combinations from the color wheel. $49
